Samsung Omnia W Vs. Acer Allegro: A Comparison

It might be a little difficult for some of the guys to believe but it is true that there is life beyond the two giants: Android and iOS. I am talking ablout the Windows Phone OS, which is quickly making strong inroads into the seroiuly thick market of both the operating systems. The super high end devices like the Nokia Lumia 900 and HTC Titan II has speeded up the process for the Windows Phone operating system.

But here we are going to talk about two of the middle range smartphones which are powered by the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS.They are: Acer Allegro and Samsung Omnia W. So without further ado let us get involved into a head to head comparison of both the devices.

CPU and RAM

The Samsung Omnia W has a single core processor which has a clock speed of 1.4GHz the processor is well complimented by a 512 MB RAM. In the Chipset segment the omnia W has a Qualcomm MSM8255. On the other hand the Acer Allegro has a 1GHz Scorpian processor with the same chipset and same RAM memory. Samsung Omnia W holds the edge here.

Storage Capacity

The Samsung Omnia W has an 8GB storage capacity but there is no space for memory card expansion. The same goes true with the other handset. So both of the mobile phones are at the same pedestal.

Display

In the display section of the comparison the Omnia W has a 3.7 inch screen, which happens to be a Super AMOLED WVGA one with a resolution of 800x440p. On the other hand the Acer Allegro has a 3.6 inch TFT screen with the same pixel resolution. Here too the Samsung Omnia W holds the edge.

Camera

The Omnia W has a 5MP camera on the rear side with auto focus and LED Flash. There is a VGA camera on the front too for self portrait and video chat. The Allegro too has an auto focus camera of 5MP with auto focus but it lacks the camera on the front side. No prizes for guessing; Omnia W wins here hands down.

Dimension and Size

The Samsung Omnia W has a dimension of 115.9 x 58.8 x 10.9 mm and weight of the handset is around 115g. It has been stated that the handset has a 3.7 inch screen. The other handset in contention, the Acer Allegro has a dimension of 116 x 59 x 13 mm and the weight of the handset is 126g. Again, the Omnia W emerges victor.

Battery

Battery of a handset is as important as any of the specifications. The Omnia w sports a Li-Ion 1500mAh battery whereas the other handset has a Li-Ion 1300mAh battery.

Data Connectivity

Samsung Omnia W has Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n. There is USB 2.0. It has GPRS and EDGE to show off. Acer Allegro in the same segment has identical offerings. Both the phones support 3G data connectivity.

Both the handsets will be costing the users around twenty thousand bucks. Acer might prove to be a tad loftier than the Omnia W.

The Verdict

Samsung Omnia W, in all the sections of the head to head comaprison, has proved to be a little ahead than the Acer Allegro, plus the price tag is also in favor of the Omnia W. There is the reputation of Samsung which makes the Omnia W a better choice between the two handsets. But, it has to be said that Acer Allegro is, by no means, closer to being a bad handset.

Why the Aakash Tablet Failed Miserably?

When the government of India came up with the idea of giving a tablet pc to all the students on a dirt cheap price tag, there was a huge hue and cry made around the news. And as the date of the release of the tablet approached the hue and cry got even more intense. The tablet named Aakash arrived and after some time it was made available for the common public. The cost conscious public of our nation took it like hot cakes as there were hundreds of thousands of pre-orders booked. But soon after, the whole halo around the Aakash collapsed like a pack of cards. Let’s try to find out what exactly went wrong with the potentially nation changing tablet.

We have to understand that if a gadget is not performing well, the price tag is rendered redundant. The biggest drawback (read blunder) of the tablet was its resistive touch that takes it half a decade back in the time line. There can be an argument that this tablet has been devised for utility and not for the luxury; but that does not ameliorate the fact that the tablet has a painful touch experience. Anyway, going further we find that the Aakash has a 366MHz single core processor, which I would have to say, with a heavy heart, is even poorer than a middle range smart phone. The 256MB RAM is equally bad.

If we talk about the storage capacity of the tablet, it sports a 2GB onboard storage capacity and a 32 GB furtherance capacity via microSD card. That again is a weakness that is hard to overlook. The battery life also was very poor as the Aakash tablet had a Li-Ion 3200mAh battery. Then it, in the age of ICS, had the antediluvian Android 2.2 Froyo.

Students too like to get entertained, but this tablet did not support MP4 and there was no loudspeaker. The camera was also a prominent absentee. And the new gen folks were disappointed, big time, over the non existence of 3G support.

All in all Aakash is a sheer waste of money, effort, and time. A blot on the Indian think tank and on the Canadian company Datawind who happens to be the manufacturer of the disappointment, Aakash Tablet!!

LG Confirms Optimus 4X HD for India

It looks like the South Korean handset maker LG has decided to let the Indian market taste the flavor of the LG Optimus 4X HD, the magnum opus of the conglomerate. LG has confirmed the handset for the Indian market, the release will transpire in the month of May. Apart from that, the company is getting ready to release a total of around 12 mobile handsets in India this year; that is some ambition.

If we go a little into the tech spec aspect of the handset we find that how really big this news is. The LG Optimus 4X HD comes packed with Cortex A9 quad core processor which is well complimented by a 1GB RAM. The handset comes with Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset. In the storage capacity section it has 16GB onboard storage capacity, which can be furthered till 48GB via 32GB microSD card expansion facility.

The LG Optimus 4X HD comes with an 8MP camera on the rear with auto focus and LED flash. It has a 1.3MP camera on the front as well. It has a HD-IPS LCD capacitive touch screen in the display segment, which has a resolution of 720x1280. As the display screen is 4.7inches the ppi becomes 312 and that is not just good, that is very good. The LG Optimus 4X HD sports a standard Li-Ion 2140mAh battery.

In the operating system column LG Optimus 4X HD has ICS 4.0 to show, which happens to be the latest and the best Android till date.

The gadget has HTML5 browser and Adobe Flash support for the net savvy folks. In the data segment the LG Optimus 4X HD has Bluetooth with A2DP, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, DLNA. Then it has HSDPA, HSUPA, EDGE, and GPRS.

There are apps to enchant the buyers such as SNS integration, Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, TV-out (via MHL A/V link),DivX/Xvid/MP4/H.264/H.263/WMV player,MP3/WAV/WMA/eAAC+ player, Document editor, Organizer, Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk,Voice memo/dial/commands, Predictive text input.

HTC Introduces the New HTC One Series

HTC has again created sensation in the mobile phone market by announcing the HTC One Series. The new range of phones looks promising as they are said to be delivering most premium mobile experience through the iconic design, amazing camera, and authentic sound experience.

The New Additions

HTC One X

HTC One S

So far, the thinnest HTC phone with 7.9mm unibody design. HTC One S has 4.3 inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass for scratch resistance. The phone has up to 1.5GHz dualcore Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor.

HTC has not refrained itself from doing some experiment with the finish of the phone. HTC One S will be available in two new finishes:

• First one is an ultra-matte black ceramic metal surface made by microarc oxidation process. It is four times harder than anodized aluminum body.
• Second finish is light-to-dark gradient fade.

HTC One V

The phone looks similar to HTC Legend and also has an aluminum unibody design. It has a 3.7 inch display and touch sensitive controls. Powered by 1GHz processor and 512MB RAM, HTC One V has 4GB internal memory and 32GB expansion capacity.

As revealed by HTC, it will begin shipping the new range HTC One in April globally through more than 165 carriers and distributors.

HP Folio 13 VS. Dell XPS 13: A Battle of the Light Weight

Ever since the Apple Inc. came out with its ultra slim and ultra light weight MacBook Air (the ultrabook that soon became the bench mark for all the other players), there has been a fierce competition going on in the market, all the makers are trying their level best to come up with some new innovation without tinkering much with the size and shape the gadget.

Of late, the two products that are attracting a lot of media and public attention are HP Folio 13 and the Dell XPS 13. So, in this article we will be comparing both the products one against another for our readers to decide for themselves that which one is better suited to their needs. So, without any further prevarications, let’s divulge into a head to head comparison.

CPU and RAM: The HP folia 13 comes powered with the second generation core i5 processor which is seconded by a mammoth 4GB RAM whereas the XPS sports the same specs as we are taking the basic XPS 13 model (XPS 13 comes in three avatars). No one seems to be gaining an edge over the other here.

Storage Capacity: HP Folio 13 comes packed with 128 GB mSATA hard drive whereas the XPS 13 offers the users up to 256 GB solid state hard drive. Here one gets a hint that the XPS 13 has a overwhelming victory over the Folio, but we should not forget that the storage capacity in a Ultra book is not that big a factor, after all the legendry MacBook Air sports the same capacity as the Folio.

Display and Dimension: In the display segment the HP Folio has on offer13.3-inch diagonal LED-backlit HD2 (1366 x 768) Bright View screen on the other hand the XPS offers Elemental Silver Aluminum and 13.3" Hi-Def (720p) True Life WLED Display. Dell XPS 13 seems to be scoring over the HP Folio.

Battery Efficiency: HP folio comes packed with 6-cell (59WHr) Li-Ion battery which is quite man enough to provide the users a work life of 9.5 hours, in reply, the XPS 13 has a 6 cell Li-Polymer 47WHr battery which provides the users with a work time of 8 hours and 53 minutes. Here the HP wins by a small margin.

Operating System: Both the devices run Windows 7 64 bit. The only difference is that the XPS runs Home Premium and the Folio runs Professional.

Connection Ports : In the ports segment the HP folio seems to be a few steps ahead of the XPS 13 as it offers you RJ-45 (Ethernet), (1) USB 3.0, (1) USB 2.0 and (1) HDMI; headphone/microphone combo jack; power connector. Whereas the XPS 13 has only USB 3.0 (1) + USB 2.0 with Power Share (1); mini Display Port (1);Headset Jack (1). In the absence of HDMI port and SD card reader XPS seems to be lagging far behind the Folio.

Connectivity: Both the devices sport Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. so both the devices are at the same pedestal in this section.

The Pricing: The Dell XPS 13 is priced at INR 79,990 and the HP Folio 13 is priced at around 69 thousand bucks. This difference of around ten thousand rupees could play a major role in deciding the fate of the laptops; undoubtedly the Hp Folio 13 sweeps this round.

The Verdict: Both the devices are standing at almost the same pedestal as far as the tech specs are concerned but the lack of ports and the hefty price tag makes the Dell XPS 13 lose some of the vital ground to the HP Folio 13.
